Problems?
When trying to open a pdf file I get the error message "Error reading linearized hint data" and the file does not open, OR, the file appears to open properly but will not read past the second or third page.  What should I do?

A Possible Solution
Here is a solution that usually works. This assumes that you are using Acrobat version 5, 6 or 7. The error did not occur for earlier versions of Acrobat.

  • Open Acrobat Reader and open the menu Edit/Preferences/General/Options (in v 5), OR) Edit/Preferences/Internet (in v 6 or 7.
  • Disable the entry: "Allow fast web view." Save the changes and reopen the web browser and try to view the file again.

It is not clear what the actual source of the problem is. But evidently Acrobat 5, 6 and 7 don't like some files that Acrobat 3 and Acrobat 4 thought were OK.

Another possible solution is to save the file to your own hard disk first before trying to read it.
