Keeping the Sabbath

 < back

The Old Testament
Genesis 2:2-3 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
Exodus 20:8-11 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work.... For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
Psalm 29:2

Give unto the Lord the glory due to His name;
Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

Psalm 95:6 O come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.
Psalm 43:3 Oh, send out Your light and Your truth!
Let them lead me;
Let them bring me to Your holy hill
And to Your tabernacle.
The New Testament
Luke 4:31-32 Then He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths.
Matthew 12:11 "It is lawful to do good on the Sabbath."
Matthew 18:20 "Where two or three are together in My name, I am there in the midst of them."
Matthew 11:28-29 "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."

When the Lord came into the world, the Sabbath became a day of instruction in Divine things and for meditation things relating to salvation and eternal life.

Arcana Coelestia 10645:2

Worship of the Lord does not consist in mere belief nor in mere love. Rather it consists in leading a life in accord with His commandments.
