“May There Be a Blessing!”
The Story of a Wedding in Heaven
By Rev. Kurt Horigan Asplundh
The second story from the Word about gifts for a bride is about a wedding in heaven. We are told about it in the book of the Writings called Conjugial Love. Emanuel Swedenborg wrote this book, and he tells us that all the stories in it are true. They are about things that really happened in heaven.
In this story, guests who were invited to a wedding were sent special wedding clothes by the prince of their angelic society. Then they followed an angel guide to the house where the wedding would take place. They found seats in a room where there was a magnificent golden candlestick and many other beautiful things.
As they watched, the bridegroom and bride came in, holding each other’s hands and led by six bridesmaids. The bridegroom and bride were wearing beautiful wedding clothes. They went to a seat of honor facing the golden candlestick where they would promise their love to each other.
When they were seated, the bridegroom turned to the bride and placed a gold ring on her finger. Then he gave her bracelets and a necklace of pearls. Fastening the bracelets on her wrists and the necklace around her neck, he said, “Accept these pledges.” As she took them, he kissed her and said, “Now you are mine,” and he called her his wife. They would live happily ever after in heaven.
Whenever the wife would look at these precious gifts, she would remember her husband’s love, thinking, “He is mine.” And whenever her husband would look at his wife and see her ring, her bracelets and her pearl necklace, he would smile and remember, “She is mine.”
All the guests at the wedding were very happy and offered best wishes to the new couple. “May there be a blessing!” they called out. And then they cried out again, all together, “May there be a blessing!” At these words, the wedding chamber was filled with a sweet smell, a sign of a blessing from the Lord in heaven.
So you see, the greatest gift to any couple, more important than gold or precious stones, is the gift of the Lord’s blessing upon their marriage, bringing them everlasting happiness. “May there be a blessing!”
