Sermons on the 2nd Commandment:

The second commandment tells you not to take the Lord's name in vain. You will learn that a name represents qualities of God and that part of honoring this commandment is accepting the Lord's divine qualities into your life. The self-examination you focused on in the last week prepares the way for the next commandment. When you find yourself being ruled by a false god, and when merely naming it is not enough, you need more. This is the time to "call upon the name of God." This is the time to pray to receive the quality that you are lacking at the moment. That quality will become God's presence with you. And when you do pray, be specific. Ask for God's Courage, or God's Patience, or God's Perseverance, or God's Compassion, or God's Righteousness, etc. In other words, call upon the name of God. Do not take God's name in vain.
