For Anne on Our Golden Anniversary

We dwell apart now, this a second time,
As we did long ago when newly wed.
And since our hearts then felt a love sublime,
We daily to each other letters sped.
But now I cannot know how soon we'll meet,
Nor can a letter help to bring you near.
Then why am I yet sure our bond's complete,
And certain that I have no loss to fear?
The reason is, the Lord says in His Word,
That marriage need not end with earthly life.
If partners have conjugial love preferred,
Then soul and soul continue man and wife.
So when we meet again beyond death's reach,
And from our souls' true state need never roam,
Our love may draw us closer each to each,
And make of two one angel, safely at home.
