Day Six: Prepared for Growth
All of the trials faced by the children of Israel were essential parts of their growth and preparation. Their enslavement in Egypt portrays the beginning of our journey out of the bondage of addictive bad habits and behaviors. To break free we must hear the Lord calling us and then face our fear of change and loss of control. We must trust the Lord and move forward. This is illustrated by the Lord speaking from the burning bush and the miracle of crossing the Red Sea.
Our longing to find answers about what to do next, where we are going, and what will happen to us, is depicted by the children of Israel thirsting in the wilderness.
Our longing for goodness delight in our lives is illustrated by the children of Israel’s hunger in the wilderness and the way the Lord satisfied them by providing daily manna.
Often we feel overwhelmed and bombarded by the challenges that hit us when we are already feeling vulnerable and discouraged. This is represented by the attack of the Amalekites on the children of Israel. But if we stay focused on the Lord and His plans for us and have the support of a spiritual community (Moses with his hands raised, supported by Aaron and Hur) the challenges can be overcome.
All these stories and the experiences they represent teach us to trust the Lord and follow Him. Trusting in the Lord is essential to any and all spiritual development. You could say that this idea is what all the Lord’s leadership up to this point was striving to demonstrate.
Insight
Looking to the Lord and having a spiritual life doesn’t make us immune to trials, rather it gives us the tools and support to move through life with kindness, integrity, strength, and trust.
