Week Seven: Receiving the Ten Commandments

Day Three: A Covenant with The Lord
Up until this point, the Lord hasn’t really asked the children of Israel to make a complete commitment to Him. But at Mount Sinai that changed. The Lord reminded the people: "You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you will be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine" Exodus 19:4-5. The response from the children of Israel is: "All that the Lord has spoken we will do."
This is the formation of a covenant in which two parties agree on their respective responsibilities. The Lord says He will provide leadership, protection, and comfort if the children of Israel will obey His laws. The same is true for us. When we compel ourselves to do the work of shunning the negative habits, attitudes, thoughts and actions in our lives, then we can hear the Lord’s voice leading us, we begin to notice the manna around us, we are able to see the truth that guides us, we can receive support from others, and, ultimately, receive life from the Lord.
Prayer
Dear Lord, thank you for this journey and this time to focus on my spiritual growth. Help me to take these tools with me and to continue using them in my life. Remind me of the places in myself that I need to be aware of and work to change. Thank you for the growth that has happened during this program and the many blessings that You are giving me. Amen.
Reflections
What kind of covenants/agreements/promises have you entered into in your life?
What would it mean for you to enter into a covenant/agreement/promise with the Lord?
If you feel ready, articulate a covenant/agreement/promise you are willing to make with the Lord.
