Chapter Six: Battles on the Journey

Day Three: Times of Weakness
As we continue on life’s journey, we come to the realization that there are battles we have to fight. We are called to be soldiers as well as travelers, to fight for what is good and true in our lives. Like the Amalekites, the hells attack us subtly. Instead of waging open war in obvious ways, they come to us in our moments of weakness and pain. They come secretly, infusing their own destructive desires in such a way that we feel these desires to be our own. If the hells were to attack us openly, we could easily resist. If they came to us right now and demanded that we lose our temper and hurt someone we love, we would resist. Yet when we come home from work, tired and exhausted, in a moment of weakness we find ourselves succumbing to this very urge and hurting the people around us. The point eventually comes where we need to get help to fight against the evils to which we are particularly vulnerable.
If we possess humility we are able to accept good from the Lord, since in that case we have been parted from self-love and its evils which stand in the way of our accepting it. Therefore the Lord desires a state of humility in us for our own sake, because the Lord can flow in with heavenly good when that exists in us. The same applies to worship and thanksgiving.
