Week Two: At the Burning Bush

Day Two: Moses and the Burning Bush
After slaying the Egyptian taskmaster and fleeing from Egypt, Moses made his way to the land of Midian, where he lived as a simple shepherd. Moses probably thought that the useful days of his life were over, that he would now spend his remaining years in the desert. But unknown to him, the Lord was using this stay in the land of Midian as a time of preparation. Moses’ life was not over; it was just beginning. As a simple shepherd, he was learning the ways of the wilderness in preparation for a great journey. He was being strengthened for that moment when he would see God.
At the end of forty years in Midian, a great event happened that changed Moses’ life. One day he was in the "back of the desert," and happened to come to a place called Horeb, the mountain of God. There the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. The bush burned with fire, but it was not consumed. The Lord spoke to Moses from the fire. He said that He was the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He said that He knew of the oppression of His people who were captive in Egypt. The Lord told Moses that He would deliver His people, that He would bring them to a good and large land, a land flowing with milk and honey. It was here, on the mountain, that Moses received the commission that would change his life. Moses was commanded to go back to Egypt and confront Pharaoh, so that he could bring the children of Israel out of Egypt. When he protested, saying "Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh?" the Lord answered, "I will certainly be with you" Exodus 3:12.
Reflections
Sometimes our lives are so busy and full we forget to pause long enough to hear God’s call. We go from TV, to radio, to cell phone calls and never have a quiet moment in between. Make time this week to be quiet. Maybe on your morning commute keep the radio off.
What do you notice in those quiet times?
Was there something you were avoiding?
Is there a new message for you in the midst of that silence?
How do you feel?
Can you calm your mind as well?
