Swedenborg Theology
Swedenborg

Emanuel Swedenborg was a scientist and theologian living in the 18th century (read the full biography). The New Church was founded on the belief that the Lord worked through Swedenborg to share His teachings about creation, life, and Himself (read about the New Church history). Swedenborg recorded these ideas in a groundbreaking, 35-volume set of writings that offer new hope for life through a clearer understanding of the Lord and a deeper meaning of the Old and New Testaments.

This New Church is the crown of all the churches which have up to now existed upon the earth, because it will worship one visible God, in whom is the invisible God, as the soul is in the body. In this way and no other is God's link with humanity possible, because humans are born natural and so think in a natural fashion; and linking must take place in the thought and in the affection of love, and this happens when people think of God as human. Linking with an invisible God is like linking the sight of the eye with the expanse of the universe, the bounds of which are not to be seen. Or it is like looking out in the middle of the ocean, when the gaze falls on the air and sea and is frustrated. But linking with a visible God is like seeing a man in the air or the sea opening his arms and inviting you to come into his embrace. (True Christian Religion 787)

The faith of the new heaven and the New Church is in universal terms as follows. The Lord from eternity, who is Jehovah, came into the world to subdue the hells and glorify His Human. Without this no mortal could have been saved, and those are saved who believe in Him. (True Christian Religion 2)

Before He came into the world, the Lord was certainly present with the people of the church, but through the mediation of angels as representatives; however, since His coming He is present with the people of the church without any intermediary. (True Christian Religion 109)

But my friend, shun evil and do good and believe in the Lord from all your heart and in all your soul, and the Lord will love you, and will give you a love of doing and faith to believe. Then from love you will do good, and from faith, which is trust, you will believe; and if you persevere in so doing, a reciprocal joining [with the Lord] will take place, which will be perpetual, and this is salvation itself and eternal life. (True Christian Religion 484)
