Reading the Lord's Word

Back

The Lord speaks to us when we read or listen to the reading of His Word. He can also teach us by means of other people when we discuss the truths of the Word and ways to apply them. Here are some ideas for making the Word part of your daily life.

  • Set aside an area in your home for the Word.
  • Read the Word at the start of your day, after dinner, in worship, or at bedtime.
  • With family or friends, take turns reading aloud selected quotes from the Word—perhaps while listening to instrumental music.
  • When reading the Word in a family setting, select a portion of the Word to read aloud and then discuss what it means. With little children, it may help to preview the story before reading it aloud and to use Bible illustrations to help them picture the story. If the story is long, tell some of it in your own words and read the most important verses aloud.
  • After reading the story, think about what it means. Ask yourself or your family questions to help focus on key aspects, such as: Who are the key people? What is happening? How do the people in the story feel? What is the Lord telling us in this part of His Word? How might this help you in your life?
