Changing Lives: Aisha from Ghana

Immediate Peace

My family used to go to a Baptist church which was just behind my house. It had a fun club every Sunday afternoon. In the morning we would go to the church service and then in the afternoon play some games. One time my father came home with a red book in his hands with writing on it, ‘The New Church’. And we asked him “What’s this?” He responded, “You didn’t ask me where I went today.” And we of course inquired, “Where did you go?” He told us he had found something that is new! And he was so excited! We sat around my father and were all eager to find out what he found utterly different and new about this New Church. So he started to tell us about the church, about the doctrines, and about how immediately when he entered the church he had felt great peace. So he asked us to join him and we said we would give it a try and next week we would go with him and if it was good we would promise to stay in the church forever.

So we went and that day the sermon was about the different concepts about God. At first I felt it was a coincidence that the pastor was preaching about that, for I had been thinking a lot about it. We listened to the sermon and I personally fell in love with the church and so did my sisters. Immediately we said regardless of what our father did we wanted to go to the New Church and we wanted to hear more of these teachings.

That is basically how we found the church. It was through God, not through any one individual. It was a miracle.

The New Church means a lot to me. The most important thing to me is that in fundamentalist Christianity there is the belief that there are three Gods: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. In the New Church, the most unique thing I’ve found in the church is the teaching on God the Father meaning Divine Love, God the Son meaning the truth which is the Will of God, and then the Holy Spirit meaning useful service. When I heard this teaching I thought, “This means a lot to me, it is an inner opening.” It made more sense to me than three Gods. When you believe there are three Gods, how are you going to worship them? When you believe God is love and that love is abundantly shared toward all humanity, then it’s easier to believe these simple truths and live according to them.

This church is the only church in the whole world that teaches these things. I find understanding the basis of this church makes me want to know more about it.

After embracing the New Church in Accra, Ghana, Aisha Dziekpor traveled to the United States where she is studying at Bryn Athyn College of the New Church, an institution founded on the teachings of the New Church.
