Heaven as One Person

Everyone in heaven performs some function that helps all others. It’s similar to how each part of a human body functions in perfect connection with all others to keep the body healthy and running in top condition.

In fact, each person’s useful contribution is related to the function of the greater body of the whole. Some play the heart of this body, some the mind, some the arms, legs, all the many organs and senses. Swedenborg says that in God’s eyes all of the heavens appear as one person, each individual playing a role in making that person beautiful and perfect. He calls it the Universal Human, or in older translations, The Grand Man.

Based on the Holy Bible, The New Church gains further inspiration and understanding through the teachings of 18th century scientist and theologian Emanuel Swedenborg. In his 35 volumes of theology, Swedenborg helps set forth the Lord's plan for a rebirth of Christianity, a clear vision of God in His own Word, and what that means in our lives.
